I would describe my style as natural southwest with a touch of modern and a hint of artsy chic. I really, really like natural woods and textiles. The "imperfections" in those decor elements give each piece an authentic beginning and true uniqueness. I like that my big blue rug has different tones and an asymmetric shape because you can really tell that it is made of natural fibers and woven by hand. I also like that you can find naturally worn items at a bargain. I love to shop markets and garage sales as well as bring home plenty of little knick knacks from trips or vacations. I like to complement those naturally imperfect or worn pieces with modern, clean-lined shapes and colors. That combination just works for me.
Kind of like the wedding saying "something old, something new..." but add something bold and something neutral.
A few years ago, I would have described my style as more of a natural, girly and boho. As I have started to collect things here and there for my home, I realized that as much as I liked fun and girly, I also want to start investing in pieces that are more elevated and sophisticated so they could grow with me and my style. Last year when I got engaged, I started to think of turning my gal pad into a home for both of us. Kelly, my fiancé, is into Spanish style homes with Colorado western touches. With the mix of his Spanish style, my boho style and the fact that we live in Colorado, we settled on a Natural Southwestern Chic style.
I find a lot of my inspiration in magazines, on Pinterest and in others homes. However, my favorite place to get inspiration is in seeing new places. I love to travel and see what other people's homes and cultures look like. My favorite thing is to bring home different pieces from around the world that somehow all work together in the same space.
I love my plants!! What is more natural than something that is actually living in your home?! I love mixing all sorts of shapes and styles as well as mixing up my plant holders and pots. Plus, it's so fun to see them grow.
I love that living in a smaller space has made me very particular about what I bring into that space. That and the combination of having a smaller personal budget! One of my favorite quotes/sayings I recently discovered (probably on Pinterest :/) is "simple but significant". Most everything I have in my home serves a purpose and is as functional as it is fashionable (hence my shoe credenza). If I am going to take the time to pick it out, pay for it, bring it home and sometimes build, assemble or install it, then I want to be able to optimize its use. My goal is to hopefully invest in pieces that I can also use wherever my next home may be. For now, I love that this space, although smaller, accommodates all my needs and is homey and welcoming at the same time.
