NAME: Kiwi Schloffel
OCCUPATION: Artist (and part of the Deny Artist family!)
LOCATION: Denver, CO
Originally hailing from the land of hobbits and sheep, Kiwi grew up in the mountains of Colorado where she learned to make a mean tree fort and first started drawing. It wasn't until years later that she realized that her love of words could be melded into her artistic style and since starting hand lettering she hasn't looked back. When she was little she wanted to be a stand-up comedian but now she just tries to make people giggle with the art that she makes and funny greeting cards and other things she sells with her business, Craft Boner.
I’ve always felt drawn to women artists because I feel like often their approach is more based in truth than ego and I’m so lucky because when I was first coming into my own artistic years I had a ton of female artists to look up to. In that sense I’ve never felt like being a female artist was much different than being any other kind of artist but I’m starting to realize that there’s something very special about using your art to connect with other women through your shared experiences.
I love this little entryway space in my studio because every time I’m there I feel immensely inspired. I try to nearly completely cover my walls in art that inspires me and I love mixing new pieces of furniture with some of my vintage finds. I especially love the “Famous on the Internet” print because it makes me chuckle to think about how extroverted my Internet personality is compared to my IRL self who prefers to spend time on the couch huddled under a blanket. My boyfriend constantly makes fun of me for buying bins and drawers and organizer-y type of things but I nearly fainted with excitement when I found the blue drawers at a thrift store. They used to store a bunch of screws and bits and they’re dented and a bit rusty and I love them even more because of it. A lot of the art in this little corner was gifted to me by friends and I think that’s what I gravitate so strongly toward it, every time I glance at it I’m reminded of how many badass ladies I know and love and who support me until the end of time and that makes me feel like the luckiest person in the universe.
I drew up the “Get it Girl” artwork based on a felt pennant that I had hanging in my office because I adore the look of vintage travel pennants and wanted to recreate a version in a fun pattern. Get it girl is the saying that I motivate myself with most often and I imagine that if my brain took human form she’d probably be waving this pennant every time that I feel overwhelmed or out of my comfort zone!
